overstory

Over the last few years as I've walked through the neighborhood I have found myself constantly looking up; interested in the way the light shows through the branches, the abstracted edges created by the individual tree canopies coming together, and how they create a singular, yet collective voice.

My latest work is inspired by those walks (with a wink of appreciation to Richard Powers'  book "Overstory").

From finished paintings to eventual collages, the individual strips are intentionally placed (and sometimes re-placed) as the work evolves. It is a very quiet and contemplative experience of creating that initiated with the peony series and continues to intrigue me in its controlled, yet surprising results.

From a process of observation...

creation...

destruction...

reassembly...

a new language emerges.
